Microtraining Associates

Celebrating 40 Years of Excellence

In 1974, Dr. Allen Ivey noticed a flaw in the way psychotherapeutic interviewing was taught. The field was flooded with training resources about broad, macro-level theories, but no one bothered with the practical, micro-level realities of the interviewing process. Regarding this widening gap in counseling training, Dr. Allen Ivey took it upon himself to create a comprehensive guide to basic attending and interviewing microskills that serve as a foundation for effective interviewing relationships. Needing a platform for this ground-breaking conceptual shift in counseling education, Dr. Ivey founded Microtraining Associates.

Since then, Microtraining has grown exponentially, having published over 450 training DVDs on counseling topics over four decades. With the advent of globalization and mass communication, Microtraining has developed multicultural techniques that cater to clients of different sexual orientation, nationality, race, religion, and age, making therapy truly accessible to people of any background. Microtraining has also pioneered the integration of cutting-edge neuroscience research into counseling training, featuring many films on neurotherapy and brain-based counseling techniques.

Today, Microtraining authors are constantly cited as the most distinguished and well-respected psychotherapy experts in the field. In addition to publishing innumerable papers and books every year, these professionals have won such distinctions as the Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology Award and the Counselors for Social Justice 'Ohana Award, and include such prestigious individuals as former presidents of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Ivey himself is the Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and has authored or co-authored more than 40 books and 200 articles that have been translated in over 20 languages.

Congratulations Microtraining Associates on leading the field in counseling training resources for 40 years!
